Stroboscopic Photography

Posted: February 4th, 2011 | Author: alice | Filed under: personal, project | 6 Comments »

Two months ago, the title “Build a Freeze Frame Photo Rig” on the cover of Make magazine got my attention.  I grabbed and flipped pages to find its article.  It is about how to make a mechanical strobe with a toy motor and a disk paper that could capture multiple images on a single image – Stroboscopic Photography.  I thought to give it a go and see if I like it.  I made:

I was excited meanwhile I set up the black backdrop and lights afterward.  I tested taking photos:

Using the electronic flash is another technical method to make the stroboscope as well that I learned from my father.  My father is also the professional photographer and he is expert in lightning and flashing strobe.  Anyway, I took photos with electronic flashes:

I really like the electronic flash method because it captured nice sharpness images.  The mechanic with the strobe disk is still good resource though.  I can either use those methods for projects in the future.  Playing with stroboscopic photography inspired me to develop ideas for a portrait project….stay tuned!

Two days ago, my mother, her friends, and I had a very good chance to attend Dalai Lama’s meeting with the Chinese Community at Fairmont Royal York during his visit to Toronto recently.  Dalai Lama talked to the audience about “Compassion and Respect.”  I took some photos of the meeting.

Diana, Lili, Lucia, and I hosted the baby shower for our good friends, Lesley and Doug yesterday.
The baby shower was successful since the guests enjoyed their time.  I set up the photo booth and it went well.  I am here to share some of pictures…

Doug and Lesley are sooooo adorable twosome.

We had fun at the event.  Especially, I am looking forward to meet a new additional member of Lesley and Doug next month!

Noel Photo Teaser

Posted: August 11th, 2010 | Author: alice | Filed under: personal, portraits | 2 Comments »

Yesterday, I painted red on Noel’s half-upper body for photo shooting. I enjoyed taking photos of her and it was an experimental shooting for me. Noel did well in the modeling, she looked confident and flexible. Moreover, Noel has an unique feature and she reminded me of the supermodel, Jenny Shimizu (when she was young) while I worked on the series on my computer. I had a magnificent time in working with her. I present you herewith a sneak peek of the photo:

Doors Open Toronto

Posted: June 4th, 2010 | Author: alice | Filed under: personal | No Comments »

Last weekend, there was an event called Doors Open Toronto. It has over 150 buildings of architectural, historic, cultural and social opened their doors to the public for showing their interior structures. My friend and I went over nine places in two days, May 29th – 30th from 10am to 5pm. It was fun and worth to explore. I took some pictures:

May 29th

Liberty Village reminded me of Brooklyn, New York because they are feeling-like integrated vintage and contemporary style.

MEC’s Green Roof is really beautiful because I can view downtown Toronto well.

Richmond
401 Richmond is a historic warehouse and it is an affordable workspaces for artists and creative enterprises. I was dumbfounded when I saw a sign noted “Rooftop Garden” because I have attended that building before with no clue about the rooftop access. The rooftop garden offers spectacular views, including downtown Toronto and CN Tower!

gladstone
I really like this mixed vintage and contemporary bar inside of the Gladstone Hotel. The Gladstone Hotel is really wicked because it is ahistoric building and it has 37 individually artist-designed rooms.

Doors Open Toronto is a good benefit for me to gain more knowledge of Toronto metropolitan areas. It is also good reference for photo shootings. I will definitely come back next year for this great event.

Montreal

At last, I have a free time to exhibit photos that I took in Montreal in the past weeks. I enjoyed my time in Montreal with my parents and I shall go back for another visit someday.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal

Inside of the Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal have beautiful interior architecture.

Schwartz’s is the BEST for its world famous smoked meat that melted in my mouth when I eat it….oh god! It was worth for me to wait in the long lineup.

Chinatown (I thought I give a try to tweak this photo for fun).

Old Montreal…I love that town!
